Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty | Dr. Hustak | Cosmetic Surgeon | Katy | Houston You might be surprised to learn that labiaplasty was the second fastest growing cosmetic surgery procedure in 2013, increasing by 44 percent from the previous year. While breast augmentation, liposuction, and tummy tuck surgery have long reigned as the most sought after aesthetic surgery procedures among women, according to national statistics, female cosmetic surgical rejuvenation is fast becoming popular because it’s no longer a taboo topic.

Labiaplasty is a term that refers to procedures that involve both the labia minora (inner lips) and labia majora (outer lips).  Most commonly, the procedure name is associated with labia minor reduction. Many women have different reasons for seeking this procedure. Some have congenital or acquired asymmetry. Some women don’t like the way their tight pants or bathing suits fit. Some women don’t like their appearance naked when their inner lips extend far beyond their outer lips. Some women don’t like the way their inner lips rub against each other during extended runs or biking. Some women even feel that it gets in the way during sexual activities. Whatever the reason, Dr. Hustak can talk with and examine you in a warm and welcoming atmosphere and suggest a procedure that may be best for you.

Labia majora (outer lip) reduction is another procedure that falls under labiaplasty. Women that seek this procedure often complain about bulkiness in the region and ill-fitting clothes. Reduction of this region can be done either by direct excision or by re-contouring with liposuction.

It is important for women to know that there is no “common” labia or “normal appearance” to genitals. Each woman is unique so it is important to seek someone that understands this procedure and can make you feel comfortable and welcome to openly discuss your concerns.

What to Expect: Labia Minora Reduction

Labiaplasty can be done under local anesthetic in the office as a minor procedure, or it can be done under general anesthesia at a hospital or surgical center, often in combination with other procedures. The procedure takes 30 to 90 minutes depending on complexity. When the procedure is done under local anesthetic instead of general anesthesia, a topical numbing cream is applied to the area and left to take effect.  After the procedure, you are placed in disposable undergarments with padding to absorb any drainage. Sutures are absorbable. Patients can go home the same day. You are kept on a modified bed rest for 5 days followed by restrictions on strenuous activity or heavy lifting for 3 weeks total.  You must refrain from intercourse for 6 weeks. Most patients are uncomfortable for the first week, which slowly improves with pelvic rest and pain medication. Most women return to work during the second or third week as long as their jobs aren’t too physically taxing. The resulting scar is largely inconspicuous.
