How long do cosmetic plastic surgery procedures last?

How long do cosmetic plastic surgery procedures last? | Houston, TexasIf a person is planning to undergo plastic surgery, an important aspect of their research will usually include how long will be the healing process and what results they can expect. But the longevity of the results should also be a consideration while choosing a procedure.

This will help the patient in selecting a procedure that not only fulfills their aesthetic expectations, but also suits their budget and lifestyle. Another significant aspect in the decision of cosmetic surgery is to choose the appropriate time in one’s life to go through the surgery.

Board certified female plastic surgeon Dr. Kristi Hustak provides cosmetic, plastic and reconstructive surgery to patients in Houston, Texas and surrounding communities.

Factors Influencing the Sustainability of a Procedure

Some of the major factors that will have an impact on the longevity of results in a cosmetic surgery procedure include:

Breast Implants need Replacement

A number of women wish to choose larger sized implants during their first consultation for breast augmentation. But an experienced surgeon will inform the patient if her choice is suitable for her body type. Although breast implants do not have an expiry date, they also do not come with a lifetime guarantee.

The average life of the silicone or saline implants is usually between ten to twenty years. Therefore, women planning to go through breast augmentation should plan for the replacement of implants at some point of time in the future.

A Healthy Lifestyle is Vital for Body Contouring

Certain cosmetic procedures require a permanent change in lifestyle after the surgery in order to maintain the results for long. Body contouring surgeries such as liposuction and tummy tuck must be supported with a healthy lifestyle and a balanced diet to maintain best results for a long time. If the patient is not able to manage a healthy and active lifestyle, they might regain the fatty tissue or excessive skin in the same or other areas.

Breast enhancement with fat transfer and breast reduction surgery are also long-term procedures. However, significant weight gain or loss after the surgery can have an impact on the size of the breast. For this reason, the patients should maintain a healthy and stable weight post-procedure.

Surgery Cannot Stop the Process of Aging

Gravitational forces and the natural aging process will continue to exist even after the surgical procedure has been accomplished, and these factors will continue to weaken the skin elasticity. As a result, over a period of time, soft tissues will surrender to that pressure. For instance, a facelift may not appear as ‘amazing’ as it did in the first year or two after the procedure was undertaken.

Nearly twenty percent of patients who have undergone facelift come back within seven years of their procedure looking for revisions or further facial tightening. Signs of aging are usually first seen around the eyes, and even after an eye lift, the face will continue to age. Therefore, patients may need to repeat their upper eyelid surgery after five to seven years.

Patients can improve the longevity of facial rejuvenation procedures by keeping themselves hydrated and using a sunscreen with a high SPF every day. They should also stay away from cigarettes and alcohol because these can lead to premature aging as well.

Does the patient’s age make a difference?

The age of a patient is not the deciding factor by itself. If a person is in good health and does not suffer from medical conditions such as osteoporosis, diabetes or high blood pressure, they could still be a suitable candidate for cosmetic surgery.

However, there are procedures, which if not performed before a particular age, will not deliver the perfect or most long lasting results. For instance, in the case of a facelift, the elasticity of the skin reduces with age. As a result the results will be much better if a patient undertakes the procedure in their forties or fifties, rather than later.

What is an en bloc Capsulectomy breast implant removal?

What is an en bloc Capsulectomy breast implant removal? | HoustonAn en bloc capsulectomy refers to the removal of a breast implant and the tissue that has formed around it with an aim to restore the patient’s original breast appearance and health. This is not essentially a cosmetic procedure.

En bloc capsulectomy is usually performed when the capsule has constricted around the implant or the implant has punctured, so as to eliminate any problematic tissue. Board certified female plastic surgeon Dr. Kristi Hustak provides breast implant removal to patients in Houston, Texas, and surrounding locations.

What does “en bloc” Mean?

En bloc (in a single block or all as one piece) implant removal technique refers to the withdrawal of the implant and the scar tissue that has developed around it (the capsule) as a singular block of tissue. This is often the chosen surgical technique because it minimizes the chances of implant rupture or capsule breakage, either of which could cause problems.

The exact surgical technique that is used will vary, depending on many factors that the surgeon will assess during your consultation. En bloc capsulectomy is primarily used when the patient wants to remove her silicone implants.

What are the factors to be considered?

Some of the aspects that the surgeon will consider for en bloc capsulectomy are as follows:

  • Whether the patient is concerned about her health due to implant damage (which may cause silicone gel leakage in the breast tissue).
  • The type and location of incision that will be placed (mostly inframammary incision) for the best access to the area.
  • Whether any (and which) portion of the capsule may have stuck to any other surrounding tissues, in addition to the implant. (There may be an added risk involved in trying to separate it from, say, the underlying rib cage.)

Should the implant be replaced?

This is a personal decision of the patient. In any case, it is important to remember that even with saline implants, the shell is produced with silicone. Many women decide to replace silicone implants with saline implants, or have their breasts restored to their original size with a custom surgery. If you have textured breast implants, whether saline or silicone, you may be interested in changing them with new smooth implants.

Duration of the Procedure and the Recovery Period

An en bloc capsulectomy surgery does not require the patients to stay overnight in the hospital. It is performed as an outpatient procedure that lasts for about two to three hours. The recovery process requires the patient to take about a week off from work, if she works in an office.

But the patient may have to stay at home for a longer time if her job involves significant physical strain. The recovery time generally depends on the current health of the patient and how diligently she follows the surgeon’s post-operative care instructions.

Acquiring a Shapely Breast Profile with Additional Surgery

Additional surgery options for adding volume to the breasts or recontouring the breasts are as follows:

  1. A breast lift surgery may be performed along with breast implant removal. This will ensure that any loose tissue is removed and a firmer and more youthful look of the breasts is restored. If necessary, the nipples and areolas may also be repositioned with a breast lift.
  2. Fat grafting in the breast area may be performed. This will involve liposuction to collect donor fat from the tummy, thighs or buttocks. The fat will be cleaned to extract the pure fatty tissue from all other types of tissue, which will be injected into the breast.

Patients should, however, note the two following two requirements for fat grafting: (a) There must be adequate fat elsewhere on the body to be collected for the procedure; and (b) There must be a suitable location in the area of the breast that has adequate tissue for the fat to be injected into and provide support to the graft.

Choosing The Best Plastic Surgeon to Remove Your Breast Implants

Choosing The Best Plastic Surgeon to Remove Breast Implants | HoustonWomen seeking breast implant removal should be aware that this cosmetic surgery can often be more complex than their primary breast augmentation.

If you have previously had an unsatisfactory experience with your implantation surgery, it makes sense to look for a different surgeon who can remove your implants carefully. The surgeon should be able to eliminate any leakage of silicone or other complications during the procedure.

You should ideally choose an ABPS (American Board of Plastic Surgery) certified plastic surgeon. Any doctor may claim to be a cosmetic surgeon, but only an ABPS board certified surgeon will have the necessary training and skills to provide you with safe and predictable results. The ABPS website gives a detailed listing of all its board certified surgeons.

Your Decision

After you have chosen surgeon who has the ABPS certification in plastic surgery, there are many questions that you need to ask them to ensure you both are on the same page. You may ask the surgeon how many en bloc or total capsulectomy surgeries they have performed in the past in order to estimate their skills and experience.

Try to speak with one of your surgeon’s past patients who has had en bloc explantation to know more about their individual experience. Lastly, you may ask for breast implant removal before and after pictures from your surgeon.

To ensure that your surgeon is able to comprehend all your needs and expectations from the procedure, note down all the points you want to discuss and carry the list with you to your consultation. This way you will not forget or skip any of the vital discussion points during the consultation with your surgeon.

Why Select an ABPS Board Certified Plastic Surgeon?

The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) is the only plastic surgery board that has recognition from the American Board of Medical Specialties. Many people are wrongly informed that their state medical boards offer a reliable indication of the skills and qualifications of the surgeon.

It is not a legal obligation for surgeons to be trained in the exact surgical procedures that they offer to patients. You may never know whether your surgeon has received appropriate training or is experienced in performing breast implant removal. These issues make it vital for you to work with a surgeon who has been certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

To acquire this prestigious certification, a doctor must receive a minimum number of years of surgical training. In addition, they must go through residency training for at least a period of three years as well as pass written and oral examinations.

On the completion of their training, the surgeon should submit documentation on all the cases that they have undertaken to the board. The board also requires surgeons to sit for renewal exams every 10 years in order to maintain their certification.
