How Long After Giving Birth Can I Have a Tummy Tuck?

How Long After Giving Birth Can I Have a Tummy Tuck? | Houston Plastic SurgeryTummy tuck surgery is an exciting step for a mother to restore and rejuvenate her body after having kids. If you recently gave birth and are wanting to undergo tummy tuck sooner than later, there is a rough timeline that will need to be followed before you are a candidate for surgery again. During your tummy tuck consultation, your surgeon will examine your abdomen and help you decide the best time for you to have your procedure. Female board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Kristi Hustak, provides breast augmentation to patients in Houston, Texas and surrounding areas.

Your Postpartum Stomach

It is normal for women to experience loose, sagging skin following childbirth. The abdomen may begin to heal and appear normal again after several weeks or months, but may never look normal again for some women. During pregnancy, the skin is stretched and the abdominal wall muscles become weak and may even separate, making the stomach appear loose. Tummy tuck surgery is the only way to repair abdominal muscles.

Tummy Tuck Procedure

Tummy tuck is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia. Your surgeon will make a long, horizontal incision that will be concealed along your bikini line, remove excess fat, and trim away loose skin. Any damaged muscles will be repaired and tightened so the skin lays flat and taut. Depending on the extent of your surgery, this procedure is usually completed within a few hours.

When is the best time to have a tummy tuck after pregnancy?

At minimum, you will need to let your body completely heal after childbirth, typically between six months to a year, before undergoing another surgery. Some other considerations before having a tummy tuck include:

  • Your recovery time. You will be unable to lift or perform any strenuous activities that may be involved with caring for your children for several weeks following tuck surgery.
  • Breastfeeding. You will be unable to breastfeed after use of anesthesia and painkillers for your tummy tuck
  • Weight. You will want to be close to your ideal weight before undergoing tummy tuck surgery to ensure best results. If you have pregnancy weight you want to lose, you should do this first to avoid potential sagging skin following your tummy tuck.
  • Future pregnancies. If you are planning to have more kids in the future, you want to hold off on having a tummy tuck to prolong your results.
