Tighten and Rejuvenate the Abdomen

Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is a procedure that surgically removes the lower abdominal redundant skin, stretch marks, and fat as well as corrects the separated central abdominal rectus muscles. This is designed to improve the overall shape of your abdomen resulting in a tightened, flatter midsection.

Tummy Tuck Surgery

Tummy tuck surgery helps you achieve a flatter, firmer abdomen by removing excess skin and fat. This surgery is ideal for patients who have experienced significant weight loss, pregnancy, or aging that has left them with loose, sagging skin. The result is a more toned and aesthetically pleasing abdominal profile, boosting your confidence and helping you feel more comfortable in your skin. As with any surgical procedure, it’s essential to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss your goals, expectations, and potential risks to ensure the best possible outcome.

Am I A Good Candidate?

Despite aggressive diet and exercise, many people are still unable to achieve a flat and firm abdomen. Large weight gains or pregnancy can stretch your abdominal skin and separate muscles and this may be  difficult, if not impossible, on some women, to correct. No matter the amount of time you spend at the gym or how disciplined your diet is, your figure may refuse to go back to its pre-pregnancy or pre-weight gain appearance. If this describes you, we encourage you to begin your tummy tuck consultation process with Dr. Hustak.

Tummy Tuck vs Liposuction

For those with excess skin, a mini or full tummy tuck is recommended since liposuction doesn’t significantly tighten the skin. On the other hand, if you have small fat rolls that you can pinch away from your abdominal muscles, liposuction alone may suffice. Should your abdominal muscles be separated or damaged, a tummy tuck is necessary to repair and tighten them. Left unrepaired, damaged muscles will show as bulges under the skin.

Often, a tummy tuck is paired with liposuction for better overall contouring. A full or classic tummy tuck involves a low incision running from hip to hip and requires repositioning the belly button. Mini-tummy tucks leave a shorter scar, slightly longer than a cesarean scar, but remove less skin and target only the lower abdomen. If you have excess or loose skin above your belly button, or muscle separation in that area, a mini-tummy tuck is not suitable. Unfortunately, very few patients qualify for the mini-tummy tuck.

Dr. Hustak can help advise you on the best procedure for your body at your consultation.

Surgery

During surgery, Dr. Hustak will make an incision along your lower abdomen, typically just above the pubic area. Through this incision, excess skin and fat are carefully removed. This will help achieve a smoother and firmer abdominal profile. The underlying muscles are also tightened and sutured to enhance core strength and stability. After repositioning the remaining skin for a natural look, the incision will be closed with sutures. You will then be bandaged to minimize swelling and support your recovery. Typically, the surgery takes between two to four hours, depending on the complexity of the case. You will be under general anesthesia for this procedure, ensuring that you remain comfortably asleep and pain-free throughout.

Recovery

Recovering from a tummy tuck requires patience and care. Initially, you may feel tired and sore, with swelling and bruising in the treated area. Follow your surgeon’s instructions closely, including wearing a compression garment to reduce swelling and support healing. You’ll need to rest and avoid strenuous activities for at least two weeks. Walking slightly bent at the waist can help alleviate tension on your incision. Pain management is crucial, so take prescribed medications as directed. Attend all follow-up appointments to monitor your progress. Gradually, you can return to normal activities, but full recovery can take several months.
