Labiaplasty Overview
Labiaplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure that involves the enhancement of inner vaginal lips (labia minora) and outer vaginal lips (labia majora). Most women only require enhancement of labia minora.
However, it is important that you know that labia don’t have a standard or normal appearance. The sexual anatomy of every woman is unique. It’s crucial that the labiaplasty surgeon assesses the health and aesthetic needs of every woman individually.
Sometimes labiaplasty may be combined with other surgical or non-surgical procedures for vaginal tightening. These may include vaginoplasty, which involves tightening of the loose muscles and tissue in the vaginal canal.
Aesthetic Goals with Labiaplasty
Majority of women seek the reduction of labia majora or minora for one of the following reasons:
- Acquired or birth related asymmetry in the labia
- Discomfort while wearing bathing suits or tight clothes

Procedure Details
Labia majora or minora reduction procedure can be performed under local anesthesia in the surgeon’s office. This is a minor procedure which can also be combined with other procedures. Although, a combined procedure would need to be performed in a hospital or surgery center under general anesthesia.
It only takes 30 – 90 minutes to complete a labiaplasty procedure depending on the complexity and number of procedures performed. A topical numbing cream will be applied by the surgeon in case the surgery is performed under local anesthesia. The surgery will be performed by making discreet incisions in targeted areas. Excess skin will be precisely trimmed away. The labia minora and majora will be reshaped for creating a youthful looking appearance.
The incisions will be closed using absorbable sutures following the procedure. You will be asked to wear disposable undergarments for absorbing any drainage at the incision site. Mostly, patients can return home the same day.
Recovering from Labiaplasty
You will be kept on modified bed rest for at least 5 days. The surgeon will advise you against lifting heavy weights and performing vigorous procedures for at least three weeks. You should avoid having sexual intercourse for about 6 weeks. Rest and medications should improve initial discomfort from the second week.
